  • Decide whether to hire a moving company or rent a moving truck.
  • Research and get quotes from moving companies if hiring movers.

2. Sort and Declutter

  • Go through each room and decide what to keep, donate, or discard.
  • Host a garage sale or donate unwanted items.
  • Begin packing items that you don’t use regularly (seasonal clothes, books, etc.).
  • Label boxes clearly with contents and destination room in your new home.

3. Notify Key Parties of Your Move

  • Change your address with the post office.
  • Notify utility companies (electric, gas, water, internet, cable, trash) about your move and schedule service disconnections and connections.
  • Update your address with banks, insurance companies, and credit card providers.
  • Inform schools, employers, and healthcare providers about the change of address.

4. Book Moving Services

  • If using professional movers, confirm the date and time.
  • If renting a truck, make a reservation early.
  • Arrange for help from friends or family on moving day.

5. Moving To Your New Home

  • Check utilities are on in the new home (electric, water, gas, internet).
  • Clean the new place or arrange for a cleaning service.
  • Leave keys and garage openers for the new owners or tenants of previous home.

6. Handle Remaining Paperwork

  • Confirm the change of address with the post office.
  • Double-check insurance coverage for moving (including contents insurance).
  • Ensure your car insurance and driver’s license are updated with your new address.

7. Arrange for Childcare or Pet Care on Moving Day

  • Consider booking a babysitter or pet sitter for moving day to reduce stress.

8. Meet Your Neighbors

  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbors to start building your community.

9. Recycle Packing Materials

  • Recycle boxes, packing paper, and plastic once you’re done unpacking.

FAQs

In a pre-qualification, the lender does not verify your financial information or documentation at this stage. They simply use your self-reported information to give you a rough estimate of how much you might qualify to borrow. Pre-qualification can often be completed online or over the phone in just a few minutes and usually doesn’t involve a hard credit check. If truly ready to start shopping for a home, we recommend being pre-approved. Contact for a list of local lenders.

The more money you put down on the loan, the lower your monthly payment will be. There are low down payment options from 3%-5% and 0% if you’re able to obtain a VA loan. If you can put 20% or more down on the loan, then you would avoid Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI)
